I don't know if this fits into the Contemporary B&W Portraits concept, at least as it was presented by Paul and Leasha in the workshop...but it is an output of that week that I do like, and so, here it is.

it's been a long and cold winter

Runner

Well,
Looks like it's been a while since anyone posted.
I am about to take Gregory Heislers "Choice and Vision" at the SFWS the first week of March.
I was uplifted by Paul and leasha's Black and White course last summer and I hope Gregory's course inspires me as much.
The image I am posting is a recent favorite inspired from a few scribbled words Paul had me dig deep to find and write on a sticky note that stays in my camera bag. Those few words are,
Passion, Creativity, Simplicity and Repetition.
I used all 4 to create this image.
Thanks Paul!!!

Thank you! thank You!

Hi there,
Doug, thanks for sending the invite again!  Carlos thanks for setting this up!

So at least I've figured out how to post words!  I'm at the studio today pushing myself to work in Lightroom and learn more digital.  I'll let you all know how it goes.

I love seeing your military series Doug.  It is super and I agree completely with Carlos.  And, Carlos, I love all of the NYC images.  And, the profile of the AA woman is really beautiful.

Keep up the good work.  I'll check back soon.
xo, Leasha

NYC or bust ...

Hey everyone! I leave for NYC tomorrow for a month of internships and hitting the pavement... So if any of you all are in the city for any reason in October, you should let me know! I'll also be at the PDN PhotoPlus Expo at the end of the month - so maybe I'll catch some of you there!

Also, the photographer that I'll be working with for a majority of the time, Platon, has a new portfolio of work out in the Sept. 29th issue of the New Yorker. It's brilliant work, you should check it out:

Platon shoots military families for the New Yorker.

Ok... I hope that you all are doing well and shooting a lot! Wish I could say that I was...

Could use some feedback!

First of all, love the blog idea. I just hope everyone grows some cajones and starts posting their newest work...

Secondly, I'm hoping you all can take a minute and hop over to my website at www.karenlenz.com because I've spent the last three weeks learned CSS and JavaScript and I made a new website FROM SCRATCH. I need feedback because I'm so far up this website's ass right now that I have ZERO perspective on it.

Thanks, guys! Hope everyone is doing well...

Hey everyone,

I'm disappearing into Burning Man in a couple of days and when I emerge I'll post some images.  I hope everyone is doing well and getting into their own work with renewed enthusiasm.  I know I am.

Thank you Carlos for getting this going!  I like staying in touch with everyone this way.

The beginning...

Contemporary Black & White Portraits is the name of a photographic workshop held in Santa Fe, at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, between the 3rd and the 10th of August 2008, by Paul Elledge and Leasha Overturf.

A group of 12 passionate photographers meet there for the first time, to learn from Paul and Leasha a new approach to the beautifull Art of Portraiture.

After 7 intense days of lectures, demos, studio and on location photography, critiques and discussions, we all came to a new understanding of what it is to make pictures, in this specific case, to make portraits.

This blog will be a private space where we will publish some of our images, and share our opinions and critiques regarding each others portraits.

Let's see how it works.
